HVAC Stocks — Investor FAQ

HVAC stocks are shares in the companies that make, supply and distribute heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment. The category spans finished equipment manufacturers such as Daikin, Carrier, Trane Technologies, Midea and Lennox, the component suppliers underneath them making compressors, heat exchangers and control valves, the chemical companies that produce refrigerants, and the distributors that sell to installers. It also covers water heating and large industrial and district heating equipment. On this list they are grouped into seven segments, and an exposure filter separates the pure plays from diversified groups where heating and cooling is one business among several.
Air conditioning stocks are the subset of HVAC companies for which cooling equipment is a core business, including Daikin, Gree Electric Appliances, Midea, Hisense Home Appliances and LG Electronics, though for the last three air conditioning sits inside a broader appliance group. In practice the distinction between air conditioning and heating companies is weaker than it looks, because a reversible air conditioner is mechanically the same machine as an air-source heat pump run in the other direction. The two products share components, factories and installer skills, which is why the largest air conditioner manufacturers are also among the largest heat pump manufacturers.
Heat pump stocks are companies with meaningful revenue from heat pumps, which move heat rather than burning fuel and run at three to five times the efficiency of a gas boiler. Very few are pure plays: NIBE Industrier and Ariston Group come closest among listed companies, while Carrier gained a leading European position by acquiring Viessmann Climate Solutions in January 2024 and Daikin sells the Altherma range across Europe. The IEA’s Heat Pump Monitor 2026 cites Daikin, Midea, NIBE and Carrier among the multinationals leading heat pump research and development. Because the equipment layer is competitive and locally manufactured, some of the more concentrated exposure sits in components and refrigerants rather than in finished units.
Heating and cooling account for a large share of global energy demand, and heat pumps are the main technology for shifting building heat from gas and oil onto electricity. The IEA reported that heat pumps met less than 15% of heating demand in buildings worldwide as of its 2026 assessment, and remained niche in industry and district heating. Electrifying heat also reduces natural gas imports: installed heat pumps cut combined gas demand across Europe, Japan and China by 53 billion cubic meters in 2025. At the same time, rising cooling demand in a warming climate is expanding the air conditioning market that heat pumps share components and factories with.
A heat pump and an air conditioner use the same vapor-compression cycle; the main difference is a reversing valve, together with the controls and defrost logic heating requires, that lets the heat pump run the cycle in either direction, so it can heat as well as cool. That is why the IEA counts reversible air conditioners as heat pumps when they serve as the primary heating equipment, and excludes them when they are used only for cooling. The commercial significance is cost: in the United States, specifying a reversible system instead of a cooling-only one added 200 to 500 US dollars to the equipment price. With more than 90% of US households already using air conditioning as of the IEA’s 2026 assessment, and around 75% of those on central ducted systems, the ordinary replacement cycle is one of the cheapest routes to heating electrification.
Less than the headline share of manufacturing suggests at the finished-equipment level, and more than it suggests at the component level. The IEA found that only around 15% of heat pumps installed in buildings worldwide crossed a border in 2024, and that every major market sourced more than 70% of its units domestically, so assembly is a local and competitive business. One level upstream the picture changes: roughly 90% of rotary compressor manufacturing capacity sat in China in 2024, which the IEA described as an acute vulnerability, while scroll compressor manufacturing and fluorspar feedstock production are more geographically diversified. China also held about 35% of global heat pump manufacturing capacity of roughly 145 GW per year in 2024.
The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, with 174 parties as of August 2026, commits signatories to cut hydrofluorocarbon use by more than 80% globally by 2050, and the European Union’s F-gas Regulation (2024/573) is stricter still. It sets global warming potential limits by product category, including a 150 threshold for several heat pump and air conditioning types, on dates that vary by equipment type and capacity. That forces manufacturers through a product redesign cycle involving flammable propane or high-pressure carbon dioxide, with new safety certification attached, which tends to favor firms that own compressor and refrigerant engineering over firms that assemble bought-in parts. It also creates a directly investable position in the refrigerant producers themselves.
Yes, on several cycles at once. Residential demand tracks construction, renovation activity and interest rates, commercial demand tracks non-residential construction, and both are heavily influenced by subsidy schedules and building codes. European heat pump sales illustrate the policy sensitivity clearly: record expansion in 2021 and 2022 was followed by a slowdown in 2023 and declines in 2024 in most countries, before a return to growth in 2025. Capacity can also be added quickly, since the IEA puts the typical lead time for a new heat pump factory at one to three years, which limits how long shortage-driven pricing power can persist.
Skilled labor is the most binding constraint. The IEA counted roughly 800,000 people worldwide working principally on heat pumps as of 2024, about 1% of the total energy workforce, and estimated that number needs to grow by between 30% and 140% by 2035 depending on the policy scenario. The shortage is sharpest in Europe, where water-based heating systems mean existing boiler installers need additional training in heat pump mechanics, electrical work and fluorinated gas handling, and where poor installations have already damaged public perception. Installation cost is the related problem: in Europe and the United States it is often high and can exceed the cost of the equipment itself.
Revenue mix differs widely: several of the largest names on this list are conglomerates where HVAC is one division among many, and the exposure filter marks them as diversified. Position in the value chain matters because the IEA found components and materials accounted for 60 to 85% of heat pump production cost in 2024, which is revenue for component and refrigerant suppliers. Geographic mix matters because demand is set locally by subsidy schedules, building codes and the ratio of electricity prices to gas prices. Refrigerant exposure is the fourth variable: the phase-down runs on a fixed regulatory timetable, so each manufacturer’s redesign deadlines are set by product category.

A heat pump that takes heat from outdoor air and delivers it directly as warm air indoors, either through ducts or through wall-mounted indoor units. It is the dominant architecture in China, the United States, Japan and the Nordic countries. Because it is mechanically the same machine as an air conditioner run in reverse, it shares components, production lines and installer skills with the cooling market, which is why cooling and heating are commercially inseparable.
A heat pump that delivers heat into a water circuit feeding radiators, underfloor loops or a hot water cylinder, a water-based arrangement known as a hydronic system. It dominates in Germany, the United Kingdom and northern Italy, where wet central heating is the incumbent architecture. Hydronic systems work best at low flow temperatures, so retrofits often need larger emitters or better insulation, and installation draws on plumbing and heating trades, with certified refrigerant handling for split units.
A compact heat exchanger built from stacked stainless steel plates brazed together, used to transfer heat between the refrigerant circuit and a water circuit. It is a common component in air-to-water heat pumps and in industrial and district heating systems. Because components and materials account for most of a heat pump’s production cost, specialist heat exchanger suppliers capture a meaningful share of the value in a machine they do not assemble.
The ratio of useful heat delivered to electricity consumed, measured at a specific operating condition. A COP of 3 means three units of heat for one unit of electricity. COP falls as the gap between the heat source and the required output temperature widens, which is why performance drops on the coldest days. Together with boiler efficiency and the electricity-to-gas price ratio, it determines whether a heat pump beats a gas boiler on running cost.
A large heat pump supplying a heat network serving multiple buildings. Potential heat sources include water bodies, wastewater, industrial processes and data centers. Network temperatures, source availability and electricity costs affect efficiency and economics.
The ratio of the retail electricity price to the retail natural gas price, including taxes and network charges. Because a heat pump is three to five times more efficient than a gas boiler, it wins on running cost only where this ratio is low enough to repay the higher purchase price over the equipment’s life. The IEA identifies it as the single most influential factor in heat pump cost-competitiveness, and countries with the lowest ratios tend to have the highest heat pump market shares.
The European Union’s rules on fluorinated greenhouse gases, which are stricter than the Kigali schedule and set declining quotas, equipment bans and servicing restrictions. Together with Kigali it is the binding timetable forcing manufacturers to redesign products around low global warming potential refrigerants, with limits that vary by equipment type, capacity and date under Regulation 2024/573.
A measure of how much heat a gas traps in the atmosphere relative to the same mass of carbon dioxide over a set period, usually 100 years. Legacy refrigerants such as R-410A have a GWP above 2,000, the widely used transitional refrigerant R32 has a GWP of 675, and the EU’s F-gas Regulation sets a limit of 150 for several heat pump and air conditioning types. Because refrigerant leaks during operation, servicing and disposal, GWP is the metric that regulation of heating and cooling equipment is written around.
A device that moves heat rather than generating it, using a refrigeration cycle to extract low-grade heat from air, water or the ground and deliver it at a useful temperature. Because it moves energy instead of burning fuel, it delivers several units of heat per unit of electricity. The IEA counts a unit as a heat pump when it is the primary heating equipment, which includes reversible air conditioners used mainly for heating but excludes units used only for cooling.
A water heater that uses a heat pump to transfer heat into stored water. Its electricity consumption and useful output depend on the heat source, water temperature and operating conditions. Some designs include an electric resistance heater for backup or higher-temperature operation.
An amendment to the Montreal Protocol that establishes schedules to phase down hydrofluorocarbons. Obligations and timing differ between country groups, with exemptions and implementation rules. The schedules influence refrigerant supply and the transition to alternatives with lower global warming potential (UNEP).
The working fluid that transfers heat through a refrigeration or heat-pump cycle. Its properties influence operating pressure, temperature range, efficiency and safety requirements. Global warming potential, flammability, equipment design and applicable regulation affect the choice of fluid.
An air conditioner fitted with a reversing valve so the refrigeration cycle can run in either direction, cooling in summer and heating in winter. The IEA counts reversible units as heat pumps when they serve as the primary heating equipment. The distinction is commercially important because in the United States, specifying a reversible system instead of a cooling-only one added 200 to 500 US dollars to the equipment price, which makes the air conditioner replacement cycle one of the cheapest routes to heating electrification.
Rotary and scroll compressors are designs used to compress refrigerant in heating and cooling equipment. Their suitability depends on capacity, efficiency, noise, refrigerant and operating conditions. Product design and customer qualification influence which compressor a heat-pump or air-conditioning manufacturer can use.
Annualized efficiency ratings that average performance across a whole heating or cooling season rather than at one test point. SCOP covers heating, SEER and its variants cover cooling, and Japan uses an APF that combines both. Seasonal ratings matter more than headline COP because they reflect part-load running, which is how equipment actually operates for most of the year. Minimum seasonal performance levels are the main lever behind efficiency regulation in most markets.
The difference between the temperature of the heat source and the temperature the heat pump must deliver. A greater lift means a lower coefficient of performance, so a machine drawing on ambient air has a limited range in which it stays cost competitive. Using a warmer source such as industrial waste heat, sewage or a data center cooling loop reduces the lift and is what allows industrial heat pumps to reach high output temperatures while remaining economic.
