Tesla, Inc. designs and builds battery-electric vehicles, with battery cell production, powertrain engineering and vehicle software developed in-house. Vehicle assembly runs at Fremont (California), Gigafactory Texas, Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg and Gigafactory Shanghai, and the Tesla Semi is built at Gigafactory Nevada.

Beyond vehicle sales, Tesla sells Megapack and Powerwall energy-storage systems and operates the Supercharger network, which had 8,704 stations and 82,357 connectors globally as of Q2 2026. Its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) products are driver-assistance systems that require driver supervision, and regulatory approval for wider autonomy remains uncertain across multiple jurisdictions. Key risks include a valuation that prices in autonomous-driving revenue, competition from legacy carmakers and Chinese EV manufacturers in Europe and China, and exposure to battery raw-material costs.

ABB Ltd is a Swiss-Swedish industrial conglomerate listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm (ABB), operating in approximately 100 countries with around 114,800 employees (Q2 2026). The company operates through three continuing business areas — Electrification, Motion, and Automation — plus Corporate and Other, which houses the E-mobility (EV charging) division. ABB’s EV charging exposure sits within Corporate and Other, not within the Electrification segment; the E-mobility division manufactures DC fast chargers and AC charging infrastructure under the Terra product family, including the Terra 360 and AC wallbox series. The division is separately financed with a planned SIX Swiss Exchange IPO that has been repeatedly deferred since 2022; in Q2 2026 E-mobility reported an Operational EBITA loss of $18 million, narrowed from $47 million in Q1 2026. In December 2025, ABB sold a 60% stake in ChargeDot (its Chinese EV charging joint venture) as part of a partial rationalization of the division.

ABB’s core group generated $33.22 billion in FY2025 revenue at an Operational EBITA margin of approximately 19.0% (within the group’s 18–22% target range). The Electrification segment (FY2025 revenues ~$17.4 billion) is ABB’s largest and highest-margin division, serving data centers, utilities, and industrial customers — its primary growth driver, with Q2 2026 orders of $7.23 billion (+58% comparable growth), the first quarter in which the segment booked more than $7 billion. In October 2025, ABB agreed to divest its Robotics business to SoftBank Group for an enterprise value of approximately $5.375 billion; the transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, and ABB stated at its Q2 2026 results that it expects approximately $4.8 billion in net cash proceeds. EV charging represents a small and currently loss-making portion of total group revenue and is not separately reported.

Xiaomi Corporation is a Hong Kong-listed technology conglomerate primarily known for smartphones and consumer electronics, which launched its electric vehicle division in 2021 and began deliveries of its debut model, the SU7 sedan, in March 2024. Xiaomi delivered over 130,000 SU7 units in 2024 and has rapidly scaled production, with monthly deliveries exceeding 20,000 units by late 2024 and growing further through 2025. The SU7 competes directly in China’s premium EV segment against Tesla and Porsche equivalents, leveraging Xiaomi’s existing brand affinity, software ecosystem (MIUI/HyperOS), and smartphone supply chain relationships. A second model, the YU7 SUV, launched in 2025. Xiaomi’s EV ambitions are supported by its AIoT (AI + Internet of Things) platform, enabling deep hardware-software integration across phones, home devices, and vehicles.

Xiaomi’s EV segment is best understood as a strategic ecosystem play rather than a standalone automotive business. Valuation is primarily driven by its consumer electronics operations; EV is an incremental growth driver and margin headwind in the near term. Note that Xiaomi is listed in Hong Kong (1810.HK), with OTC trading available in the US (XIACF). Key risks include EV segment profitability timeline, China domestic market competition, hardware margin pressure, and the complexity of tracking EV-specific performance within a diversified technology conglomerate. Xiaomi’s EV ramp is among the fastest in industry history and warrants monitoring as a significant market participant.

BYD Company, headquartered in Shenzhen, China, builds battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles for consumer and commercial fleet customers. It sold 4,602,436 new energy vehicles in 2025, up 7.7% on 2024, including just over one million outside China; the total counts plug-in hybrids as well as battery-electric models. The group makes its own lithium iron phosphate cells and packs through FinDreams Battery, including the Blade Battery used across its vehicle range, and also runs electronic-components and rail-transit businesses.

In-house cell and pack production reduces BYD’s dependence on outside battery suppliers, and FinDreams also supplies selected external customers. China is BYD’s largest market, and the company has expanded into Europe and Southeast Asia. Key risks include Chinese policy shifts, price competition from other Chinese carmakers at home and in export markets, battery safety regulation and currency exposure to the renminbi.

LG Energy Solution is the world’s third-largest EV battery manufacturer (~11% global share in 2025). It supplies pouch and cylindrical cells at scale today; prismatic cells were still pre-production as of its Q2 2026 earnings call, and reaching volume supply would make LGES the first global maker to offer all three formats. The company is a primary beneficiary of US Inflation Reduction Act manufacturing tax credits, which contributed KRW 1,647 billion to FY2025 results and remain critical to underlying profitability. Key wins include a 440+ GWh order backlog for the 46-Series cylindrical (Tesla and other adopters) and a 140 GWh North American ESS backlog anchored by US grid-scale projects. Global ESS capacity is targeted at 60+ GWh by end-2026, with more than 80% located in North America. LGES posted an operating loss in Q1 2026 as EV pouch volumes fell on North American OEM destocking, then returned to a small operating profit in Q2 2026 (KRW 113 billion, a 1.5% margin) on energy-storage growth and better European utilization. Parent LG Chem retains majority control.

General Motors builds its EVs on a shared propulsion platform developed with LG Energy Solution (the architecture formerly branded Ultium), spanning the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV, the Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trucks, and Cadillac’s Lyriq and Escalade IQ. That breadth made GM the number-two EV seller in the US in 2025: deliveries hit a record 66,501 in the third quarter and about 145,000 over the first nine months, roughly double a year earlier, as buyers pulled purchases forward before the $7,500 federal tax credit expired on September 30, 2025.

The credit’s expiry is the strategy’s test. GM cut EV production and took a $1.6 billion charge in October 2025 to rebalance capacity, and its earlier target of one million EVs annually by 2025 had been abandoned well before the deadline; the 2035 all-EV ambition is now framed as demand-dependent. Unionized labor costs, battery joint-venture utilization and price competition in mass-market EVs are the constraints on making the platform investment pay.

Hyundai Motor (KRX: 005380) is South Korea’s largest carmaker and sells battery-electric vehicles across the price range, from the Kona Electric and IONIQ 5 to the Genesis GV60 and Electrified G80. The IONIQ 5 and GV60 sit on E-GMP, a dedicated EV architecture shared with group affiliate Kia, so one platform investment carries models in several segments and across the Hyundai, Genesis and Kia brands. Assembly runs from South Korea, Europe and North America, where Metaplant America in Georgia was built to produce EVs inside the US content rules governing federal purchase incentives. Hyundai runs a hydrogen line alongside the battery models — the Nexo fuel-cell SUV and the XCIENT fuel-cell truck, both built on its HTWO fuel-cell systems — making it one of the few carmakers shipping series-production vehicles on both drivetrains. At its September 2025 CEO Investor Day, management replaced its earlier pure-EV volume goal with a broader electrified-vehicle target spanning battery EVs, hybrids and extended-range models.

Four things sit between EV volume and the margin on it. South Korean assembly is unionized, which raises the labor cost embedded in each vehicle against non-unionized competitors. The ICE fleet still occupies plants and working capital that the EV lines are meant to absorb. Cell supply is concentrated among a small number of Korean battery makers, so input cost and availability move with a handful of counterparties. And Chinese manufacturers compete directly on price in the mass-market segments where most of that volume would have to come from. The Georgia build commits capital ahead of the volumes that pay for it.

Panasonic Holdings’ battery business (Panasonic Energy) is Tesla’s longest-standing cylindrical cell partner and holds an estimated 80% share of Battery Backup Units (BBUs) supplying hyperscaler AI data centers — a fast-emerging growth driver. The Kansas factory (De Soto), Panasonic’s first new US EV battery plant, started mass production in July 2025 and is ramping toward ~32 GWh annual capacity, complementing the existing Gigafactory Nevada partnership. The Energy segment generated ¥873 billion of FY3/25 sales (~11% of the ¥8.46T group), with 80%+ of projected FY3/29 data-center storage revenue already contracted. The broader 5-segment group provides capital depth, but battery remains a minority of overall earnings. In the quarter ended June 2026 the in-vehicle battery business was held back by Kansas ramp-up costs and US tariffs rather than by weak demand, with North American cell volumes of 10.2 GWh, while data-center storage sales reached ¥113 billion, 1.9 times the year-earlier quarter.

Ford Motor has pivoted aggressively toward electric powertrains, separating legacy ICE operations (Ford Blue) from EV-focused business (Ford Model e) to highlight distinct profitability and valuation profiles. The company’s EV portfolio centers on the Mustang Mach-E; the F-150 Lightning was discontinued and Gen-1 electric volumes were right-sized to customer demand during the first half of 2026, taking Ford Model e wholesales to 28,000 units in Q2 2026 from 60,000 units in Q2 2025. A new Universal EV (UEV) platform is being installed at the Louisville plant, with the first product aimed at the affordable end of the US EV market and specified with bi-directional charging. Ford disposed of the BlueOval SK battery joint venture with SK On in May 2026, recognizing a $3.6 billion largely non-cash special item charge in Q2 2026. It is building out Ford Energy, a stationary battery storage business reported inside Model e, at a gigafactory in Glendale, Kentucky. The company’s legacy manufacturing footprint in high-volume markets (North America, Europe) provides structural scale advantages in addressable EV segments.

Ford faces structural challenges including legacy labor agreements driving material cost disadvantages versus global competitors, manufacturing under-utilization as ICE production declines, and competitive vulnerability in electric truck segment against Tesla and newcomers. The company’s separate reporting structure (Ford Blue, Ford Model e, Ford Pro) reflects management acknowledgement of divergent financial profiles, with the EV business still lossmaking: Model e reported a $919 million EBIT loss on $1.0 billion of revenue in Q2 2026, a third consecutive quarter of year-on-year EBIT improvement. Supply chain concentration in North American manufacturing and historical customer demographics skewing toward ICE buyers create execution complexity. Key risks include working capital requirements from ICE wind-down, margin compression from legacy cost structures unsuitable for EV economics, and significant capital allocation uncertainty around manufacturing facility investments. Ford’s truck segment strength and North American market position provide differentiation, but sustained profitability remains uncertain.

Mercedes-Benz Group has committed to 50% EV sales mix by 2030 with strategic focus on luxury and premium segments where electric powertrains support pricing power and margin preservation. The company’s product portfolio—EQS sedan, EQE entry-premium vehicle, GLE SUV variants—emphasizes luxury positioning and technological sophistication appeal to affluent global consumers. Mercedes-Benz’s manufacturing strategy prioritizes high-value vehicle segments and geographic markets where premium EV demand supports profitability, contrasting with mass-market EV segment competitive intensity. Battery supply partnerships and internal manufacturing expansion provide capacity and cost optimization optionality.

Mercedes-Benz faces similar structural challenges as BMW including premium segment addressable market constraints, legacy manufacturing footprint under-utilization, and labor cost structures unsuitable for EV-era unit economics. The company’s exposure to German unionized manufacturing and substantial pension obligations create inflexible cost structures limiting competitive flexibility versus emerging competitors. Supply chain complexity and manufacturing sophistication drive execution risk and cost inflation exposure. Investor considerations include premium segment economic sensitivity, margin compression from ICE transition, and valuation multiples reflecting mature market dynamics. Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-premium brand equity and customer base provide competitive defensibility, but growth optionality remains constrained by addressable market size and economic cycle sensitivity.

Volkswagen Group represents the most aggressive legacy OEM pivot toward full electrification, targeting 70% EV sales mix by 2030 and 100% by 2035. The conglomerate’s sprawling platform architecture—ID (mass-market), Audi e-tron (premium), Porsche Taycan (performance), commercial (MAN, Scania)—spans all market segments, addressing addressable markets from entry-level city cars to high-margin luxury and commercial applications. Volkswagen’s capital expenditure program (€180 billion through 2027 on electrification and digitization) represents the largest automotive sector EV investment globally, financed through gradual ICE profit realization and debt financing. The company’s European battery cell manufacturing expansion and strategic partnerships (PowerCo, Northvolt, CATL) provide scaling optionality across multiple chemistries and geographies.

Volkswagen faces significant structural headwinds including legacy manufacturing footprint under-utilization, labor cost structures unsuitable for EV-era profitability, regional market saturation in Western Europe, and vulnerability to Chinese competitor price deflation across all segments. The company’s software platform transition (Cariad) exhibits execution risk, with delays affecting competitive positioning in autonomous driving capabilities. Investor considerations include margin compression during transition from high-margin ICE to lower-margin EV production, substantial stranded assets in ICE platforms and facilities, and uncertainty around European EV demand growth timing. Volkswagen’s scale advantages and premium brand portfolio (Audi, Porsche) provide resilience, but the company’s ability to execute profitable EV transitions while managing massive legacy costs will determine shareholder returns.

BMW Group sells battery-electric models across BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, with BEVs at roughly a sixth of group deliveries in 2024. The strategic shift is the Neue Klasse, a dedicated EV architecture with new battery, electronics and software stacks. Its first model, the iX3, was unveiled at the Munich IAA in September 2025 and entered series production at the new Debrecen plant in Hungary in late October 2025, with BMW citing up to about 800 km WLTP range and 400 kW peak charging. Demand pulled the ramp forward: a second shift was added in February 2026 and the 50,000th iX3 was built by July 2026, with European deliveries from spring 2026, the US to follow, and a Neue Klasse sedan next.

BMW has avoided hard EV-share deadlines, scaling output to demand across drivetrains on shared lines. The constraints are the premium segment’s ceiling on volume, German labor costs, cell supply concentrated among a few partners, and Chinese premium-EV competition in a core profit market. Neue Klasse carries the margin case: BMW says the new generation improves on the cost structure of its current EVs, though it has not published a single cost-reduction figure.

Geely Automobile, headquartered in Hangzhou, China, manufactures mass-market electric and combustion vehicles for Chinese domestic and emerging market applications. The company’s product portfolio emphasizes affordable pricing and practical positioning, competing against BYD and domestic startups in budget-conscious consumer segments. Geely’s parent company, Geely Holding, operates multiple automotive brands (Volvo, Polestar, Lynk & Co, Geometry, Geely brands) creating portfolio diversification and technology transfer opportunities across vehicle segments and geographies. The company’s strategic partnerships (Volvo, Daimler through Smart joint venture) provide access to premium brand technologies and customer channels while maintaining independent manufacturing operations.

Geely Automobile faces structural positioning challenges as mass-market EV segment becomes increasingly commoditized, with pricing pressure from competitors aggressively pursuing market share. The company’s geographic concentration in Chinese domestic market creates policy and demand exposure, while limited international brand recognition constrains expansion opportunities into developed markets. Manufacturing scale remains below dominant competitors, creating cost structure disadvantages as industry consolidates. Investor considerations include margin compression from competitive pricing dynamics, capital requirements for manufacturing capacity expansion, and uncertain brand differentiation in commoditizing mass-market segment. Geely’s parent company portfolio provides strategic optionality, but standalone business unit profitability and competitive positioning remain constrained.

Chery Automobile, headquartered in Wuhu, Anhui, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 25, 2025 at HK$30.75 per share, raising about HK$9.1 billion (US$1.2 billion) in the city’s largest carmaker IPO of the year. The group sold 2.60 million vehicles in 2024, 1.14 million of them exports, and has been China’s largest passenger-car exporter for over two decades. New energy vehicles are the fastest-growing part of the mix, at roughly 826,500 units in 2025, spread across the Chery, Exeed, Jetour and iCAR brands, the export-focused Omoda and Jaecoo lines, and Luxeed, the smart-EV marque developed with Huawei.

Chery sits on this list as a legacy OEM rather than a pure play: most of its volume is still petrol-engined, and its NEV push leans on plug-in hybrid models where export demand is strongest. Its first post-listing annual results, for 2025, showed revenue of CNY300.3 billion, up 11.3%, and attributable profit of CNY19.0 billion, up 34.6%. The risks that come with the model are export concentration in emerging markets including Russia, tariff exposure in Europe, and a domestic price war that pressures the margin on every NEV it sells at home.

Rivian Automotive is one of the few US pure-play EV startups to have reached meaningful production scale (R1T pickup, R1S SUV, the R2 mid-size SUV, and commercial delivery vehicles). External customer deliveries of R2, the company’s higher-volume model, began in June 2026, with the premium and standard trims scheduled to follow in early 2027. The company’s platform architecture separates adventure vehicles (R1T, R1S) from commercial EV vans (Amazon collaboration), enabling market segment diversification and revenue optionality beyond premium consumer vehicles. A third revenue stream, the software and services segment, whose largest single contributor is the joint venture with Volkswagen Group, generated $515 million of revenue and $215 million of gross profit in Q2 2026: enough to carry consolidated gross profit into positive territory while the automotive segment was still loss-making at the gross level. Rivian’s manufacturing footprint is US-based: the Normal, Illinois plant, with a second plant under construction in Georgia supported by a $6.6 billion US Department of Energy loan that closed in January 2025. The company’s recent capital raises and strategic partnership discussions reflect management’s implicit acknowledgement of funding requirements extending through cash flow breakeven, estimated circa 2027-2028 depending on production ramp trajectories.

Rivian faces heavy pre-profitability capital requirements, cushioned by the Volkswagen joint venture (up to $5.8 billion committed) and the DOE loan, execution risk on manufacturing facilities not yet fully operational, and intense competition from Tesla, Ford (F-150 Lightning), GMC, and potential Chinese imports in premium truck segment. The company’s customer base (wealthy early adopters with strong brand affinity) provides near-term revenue support, but volume scaling to economically viable unit volumes (500,000+ annually) remains unproven. Working capital requirements associated with capital-intensive manufacturing represent substantial cash drain during ramp phase. Key risks include valuation sensitivity to profitability timelines and working capital management, concentration risk in North American premium truck segment, and vulnerability to Tesla and Chinese competitor pricing pressure. Rivian’s premium positioning and technical execution capabilities provide competitive differentiation, but cash requirements and unproven unit economics constrain institutional investor appetite beyond risk-tolerant capital pools.

A Malaysia plant — the first Chinese cell facility in the country — addresses non-Chinese OEM sourcing needs. ESS shipments are growing rapidly, placing EVE among China’s top-two storage battery suppliers. FY2025 revenue was CNY 61.5 billion (+26% YoY) with net profit of CNY 4.1 billion (~6.7% margin); power battery shipments rose 66% to 50 GWh and ESS shipments grew 41% to 71 GWh.

POSCO Future M is a South Korean materials producer supplying both cathode active materials and graphite anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Its cathode portfolio includes NCM and NCA products, while its anode business covers natural and artificial graphite. This position on both sides of the cell gives the company broader battery-materials exposure than producers focused on a single electrode material.

Production is centered in South Korea, with overseas cathode expansion pursued through customer partnerships. In Canada, POSCO Future M and General Motors are developing the Ultium CAM joint venture in Bécancour, Québec; joint-venture capacity and investment should be distinguished from wholly owned Korean operations. Long-term supply agreements with LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI and Ultium Cells support future demand, but announced contract values vary with volumes and raw-material prices and are not fixed cash backlog. POSCO Future M also retains refractories and lime businesses outside battery materials.

Stellantis, formed in the 2021 merger of PSA and Fiat Chrysler, runs 14 brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall. Shared STLA platforms span entry to premium segments, and battery supply mixes the ACC joint venture with external contracts. The group also holds about 20% of China’s Leapmotor and 51% of Leapmotor International, the venture that sells and assembles Leapmotor EVs outside China, giving it a low-cost Chinese EV line alongside its own brands.

In September 2025 the group confirmed it would no longer target 100% battery-electric sales in Europe by 2030, the headline goal of the 2022 Dare Forward plan, moving under CEO Antonio Filosa to a multi-energy line-up of BEVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids while keeping its 2038 carbon-neutrality goal. The open questions are a North American recovery after the 2024-25 volume and margin declines, European demand, and whether a brand portfolio this wide can be rationalized without stranding capacity.

Seres Group is the Chinese automaker behind AITO, the premium electric and extended-range vehicle brand developed with Huawei. The partnership is the investment case. Huawei supplies the cockpit software and advanced driver-assistance stack, participates in product definition, and sells the vehicles through its own retail network, which gave AITO a route to market that other new entrants had to build showroom by showroom. Seres acquired the AITO trademark portfolio and related design patents from Huawei for CNY 2.5 billion, agreed in July 2024, formalizing what had previously been a contractual relationship.

That model separates Seres from both groups it sits between on this list. It is neither a full-stack developer like NIO or XPeng, which own their software and their customer relationships, nor a conventional manufacturer bolting EVs onto an existing range. It is a manufacturer paired with a technology partner that owns the customer interface, which is the opportunity and the concentration risk in a single sentence: brand momentum depends on a partner Seres does not control, and Huawei has extended similar arrangements to other automakers. Seres added a Hong Kong listing in November 2025, raising roughly HK$14 billion, which gives international investors a direct line alongside the Shanghai shares. A legacy commercial vehicle and microvan business remains from the company’s earlier incarnation as Sokon.

Li Auto built its position on extended-range electric vehicles, the L6, L7, L8 and L9 family SUVs, which pair a battery with a gasoline range extender and made it the first of the US-listed Chinese EV trio to reach sustained profitability, from 2023. The line-up now runs both drivetrains: the MEGA MPV (2024) opened the battery-electric side, followed by the i8 SUV in July 2025 and the i6 in September 2025, supported by a company-built high-power charging network. Shares trade on Nasdaq (LI) with a dual-primary Hong Kong listing (2015.HK).

The extended-range niche that funded the company is now crowded: the Huawei-partnered AITO brand targets the same family-SUV buyer, and price competition compresses the premium Li Auto charges. The tests are execution on the battery-electric transition, where MEGA’s slow start showed the brand does not transfer automatically, and sustaining margin through China’s price war; a profitable, net-cash balance sheet gives it more room than most domestic peers.

The company’s multi-brand strategy (Renault, Dacia, Alpine, Mobilize) spans market tiers enabling comprehensive EV segment coverage. Renault’s recent strategic separation (legacy ICE business versus EV-focused Ampere) reflects management acknowledgement of divergent financial profiles and valuation dynamics, enabling independent capital allocation and strategic decision-making. The company’s geographic footprint spanning European and emerging markets provides manufacturing diversification and cost optionality.

Renault faces challenges including legacy manufacturing footprint concentration in high-wage European geography, labor cost structures unsuitable for competitive EV economics, and Western European domestic market saturation constraining organic growth optionality. The company’s mid-premium positioning faces competitive pressure from both mass-market Chinese competitors and established premium OEMs. Manufacturing efficiency and supply chain execution remain critical competitiveness factors as margins compress during ICE transition. Investor considerations include transition-phase margin compression, working capital stress, and uncertain profitability pathways for EV-focused business unit. Renault’s portfolio diversification and geographic footprint provide resilience, but execution complexity in managing simultaneous brand, regional, and powertrain transitions creates valuation uncertainty.

Guangzhou Tinci Materials is a Chinese specialty chemicals group whose largest business is lithium-ion battery electrolyte, the liquid that carries lithium ions between a cell’s anode and cathode. Its principal advantage is vertical integration. Tinci manufactures lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), the salt that accounts for much of electrolyte input cost, at its Jiujiang base in Jiangxi instead of relying entirely on third-party supply. This can widen its advantage over non-integrated formulators when salt prices rise and compress it when they fall. The company also makes electrolyte additives and has expanded into lithium iron phosphate cathode material.

Electrolyte is generally more price-sensitive and less capital-intensive than separator film or cathode material. Formulations are customer-specific and take time to qualify, but sustained Chinese capacity additions through the early 2020s left the market well supplied. Tinci is therefore particularly sensitive to cell-production volumes and the LiPF6 price cycle. A legacy personal-care chemicals division remains, although battery materials now provide the main earnings exposure.

VinFast delivered 196,919 EVs globally in 2025 — a 102% year-over-year increase — with Vietnam as its primary market and rapidly expanding presence across Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, India) and North America. The company operates manufacturing facilities in Vietnam and has established assembly capacity in India and Indonesia, targeting 600,000 units of annual installed capacity as of 2025.

VinFast’s path to profitability remains in early stages, with a gross margin of negative 42.5% in 2025 (improved from negative 57.4% in 2024) and a 2026 delivery target of 300,000+ units. The company’s asset-light pivot — including the planned divestiture of two Vietnamese factories to reduce $6.9B in debt — signals a strategic shift toward capital efficiency. VinFast is a high-risk, high-growth story: revenue grew 105% year-over-year in 2025 and Q4 deliveries hit a record 86,557 units. Investor considerations include profitability timeline uncertainty, heavy reliance on the Vietnamese domestic market, Vingroup parent company concentration risk, and execution risk in international expansion. The stock remains highly volatile and thinly traded relative to major EV peers.

Semcorp entered battery separators through its Shanghai Enjie subsidiary after developing film-manufacturing expertise in packaging materials. Its main operating base is in China, and it has pursued overseas production in Hungary and the United States to serve international cell makers. The Debrecen, Hungary plant faced regulatory suspensions in 2025 and 2026 involving emissions, groundwater and permit compliance. On July 3, 2026 the Hajdú-Bihar county government office prohibited all activity at the site with immediate effect. Semcorp published an open letter on August 26, 2026 disputing the groundwater findings, which is not a restart approval; no restart decision had been published as of September 9, 2026, so the Hungarian plant is a regulatory interruption rather than operating capacity.

Kedali competes on stamping and deep-drawing tolerances, weld quality and cost per unit at high volume. Revenue is concentrated among a small number of large customers, led by CATL. Tooling and component designs are specific to each cell format and customer, so changes in format preference can affect demand. CNGR Advanced Material is one of the largest producers of cathode precursor material (pCAM), the nickel-cobalt-manganese intermediate that cathode makers convert into finished active material. Precursor sits between refined metal and cathode, and its composition strongly influences the chemistry of the finished cell, which makes this the point in the chain where nickel and cobalt supply security converts into cathode competitiveness.

CNGR’s strategy has leaned toward integrating backwards into that raw-material supply, principally through nickel processing capacity in Indonesia, where it has been investing since 2021 in nickel matte and intermediate production at the Morowali industrial park, converting laterite ore into battery-grade feedstock. It has also pursued capacity outside China to serve cathode and cell plants in Europe and North America, though non-Chinese geography does not by itself satisfy US prohibited-foreign-entity ownership and control tests, so credit eligibility has to be assessed separately. Because precursor is priced off nickel and cobalt, earnings carry direct base-metals exposure stacked on top of cell-demand exposure, which makes this a more cyclical holding than its position in the chain alone would suggest.

GEM refines recovered nickel, cobalt and lithium into cathode precursor material that can return to cell production, putting it in competition with dedicated precursor manufacturers.

Recycling margins depend on the value of recovered metals relative to collection and processing costs. They generally improve when nickel, cobalt and lithium prices rise and narrow when prices fall. End-of-life battery volumes also lag EV sales by many years, so production scrap from cell plants remains an important source of near-term feedstock.

GEM supplements recycled material with primary nickel processing in Indonesia through the QMB New Energy Materials joint venture at the Morowali industrial park. This gives the company access to additional nickel feedstock, but means its results do not depend solely on recycling.

The flagship QSE-5 cell features a proprietary ceramic separator and an “anode-free” architecture targeting >800 Wh/L energy density and 12.2-minute 10-80% fast charge. Volkswagen Group, which owns ~26% voting interest, is the lead commercial partner via subsidiary PowerCo: up to $130.7 million in milestone-contingent contributions over two years plus a contemplated $130 million royalty pre-payment for capacity up to 40-85 GWh annually. The Cobra separator process (25× faster heat treatment) entered baseline production in 2025, and B1 samples powered the Ducati V21L motorcycle demonstration at IAA Mobility — QS’s first real-world vehicle deployment. The San Jose Eagle pilot line is ramping. Q1 2026 cash burn ran ~$59.5 million.

Lucid Group manufactures premium luxury electric vehicles targeting high-net-worth individuals, particularly in North American and emerging Middle Eastern markets. The company’s Lucid Air sedan emphasizes ultra-premium positioning with advanced autonomous driving capabilities, performance specifications exceeding Tesla Model S/X in certain dimensions, and sophisticated interior design appeals to luxury segment consumers. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund holds a majority stake of about 60% and has recapitalized Lucid repeatedly since 2018, a funding backstop few EV startups have. The Gravity SUV is now in market and accounted for the majority of second-quarter 2026 deliveries, extending volume beyond the Air sedan; the group produced 4,774 vehicles and delivered 3,953 in Q2 2026.

Lucid remains deeply loss-making: free cash outflow was $1.48 billion in Q2 2026 alone and gross margin was negative 105%, on unit production volumes among the lowest of viable automotive manufacturers and with little insulation from pricing pressure among established luxury competitors (Tesla, Porsche, Mercedes-Maybach). The company’s customer base concentration in ultra-premium segment limits addressable market size and revenue growth optionality. The manufacturing footprint remains a structural cost disadvantage: the Arizona plant (AMP-1) dropped to a single shift during Q2 2026 as production was cut deliberately to convert inventory into cash, while the Saudi plant (AMP-2) moved from construction into industrialization in the same quarter. Key risks include continuing funding requirements extending through potential 2028-2030 profitability horizon, valuation dependency on execution perfection in capital-intensive, low-volume manufacturing, and vulnerability to PIF capital reallocation toward alternative strategic priorities. Lucid’s premium technology and design capabilities provide differentiation, but the combination of pre-profitability burn and ultra-limited addressable market creates outsized risk profile suitable only for venture-stage capital tolerances.

VOYAH Automotive Technology, Dongfeng’s premium electric vehicle unit headquartered in Wuhan, began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (7489.HK) on March 19, 2026 by way of introduction, so the listing raised no new money. It arrived through an unusual route: Dongfeng Motor Group’s privatization by merger absorption, under which Dongfeng’s H shares were withdrawn from listing on March 18, 2026 and shareholders received 0.3552608 VOYAH shares plus HK$6.68 in cash per Dongfeng share, making VOYAH the group’s listed vehicle in Hong Kong. Dongfeng remains the controlling shareholder and added to its stake in the months after listing.

The line-up spans the FREE and Courage SUVs, the Dreamer MPV and the Passion sedan, offered as battery-electric and extended-range variants, with Huawei driver-assistance and cockpit systems in newer models. Deliveries reached 150,169 vehicles in 2025, up from 50,285 in 2023, on revenue of CNY34.9 billion. The brand competes in the crowded premium NEV segment against AITO, Li Auto and NIO, and because the introduction brought market access rather than fresh capital, growth funding still runs through the state-owned Dongfeng group.

Its systems, including the ChargeBox, the all-in-one ChargePost (up to 300 kW) and the mobile ChargeTrailer, integrate battery storage so that ultra-fast charging can run on grid-limited or low-power connections without costly grid upgrades. The company is shifting toward service and software revenue and an owner-operator charging model: FY2025 revenue fell to about EUR 32 million (from about EUR 110 million in FY2024), hit by a key customer’s insolvency and the strategy shift, while service revenue nearly doubled to EUR 10.3 million.

Ownership shifted in February 2024 when Volvo Cars cut its stake to about 18%, leaving Geely-related interests led by chairman Li Shufu as the controlling backers and funding source.

Retail sales reached a record of about 60,100 cars in 2025, up 34%, but the company remains loss-making and has depended on repeated Geely-backed financing, and its earlier mid-decade volume targets were shelved as focus moved to margin and cash. ChargePoint Holdings operates the largest EV charging network in North America, with more than 385,000 active ports running on ChargePoint software and access to approximately 1.37 million ports worldwide via roaming agreements, spanning commercial, fleet, workplace, and residential segments. The company’s business model combines Networked Charging Systems hardware sales (52.6% of FY2026 revenue) with recurring software subscriptions including CMS (Charger Management Software), eMSP services, and ChargePoint-as-a-Service (CPaaS) — subscription revenue of $162.4 million in FY2026 grew 13% year-on-year and carries a record 64% gross margin. ChargePoint’s FY ends January 31: FY2026 (ended January 31, 2026) total revenue was $411.2 million with a GAAP net loss of $220.2 million. The company serves both North American (83% of FY2026 revenue) and European (17%, growing) markets, with Level 2 AC its dominant product and a next-generation DC fast-charging platform — the Express Solo, launched April 2026 — with broader commercial ramp expected through FY2027. ChargePoint executed a 1-for-20 reverse stock split in July 2025 to regain NYSE minimum bid price compliance.

ChargePoint faces margin pressure from elevated inventory ($214.9 million at January 31, 2026) accumulated during a product transition, competitive intensity, and the structural challenge of a large Level 2 installed base in a market where DCFC demand is growing faster. Net cash used in operations improved sharply to $62.8 million in FY2026 (from $146.9 million in FY2025), and cash at January 31, 2026 was $141.6 million against ~$261 million in total debt. A March 2026 reorganization is expected to generate further annual operating expense savings. The company’s scale — trusted by over 60% of Fortune 500 companies (and over 80% of Fortune 50 companies per ChargePoint’s FY2026 10-K) — and software platform remain key competitive strengths, but a concrete timeline to positive Adjusted EBITDA has not been publicly disclosed; management points to H2 FY2027 as the key inflection point as next-generation hardware ramps.

EVgo Inc. operates one of the largest public DC fast-charging networks in the United States, with 5,280 total stalls across more than 1,200 fast-charging locations in 47+ states as of Q1 2026 (5,100 at year-end 2025, +25% year-on-year). The network is exclusively DCFC: 62% of public stalls deploy 350 kW ultra-fast hardware, and the network supports both CCS and NACS connectors. The network delivered 366 GWh of throughput in FY2025 (up 32% year-on-year), with approximately 1.6 million registered customer accounts. EVgo’s primary non-dilutive capital source is a DOE Title 17 loan with a total facility of $750 million (reduced from ~$1.25 billion by the First Omnibus Amendment in April 2026), supplemented by a $300 million commercial Credit Agreement. The company listed on Nasdaq via SPAC in July 2021; its majority shareholder is LS Power (EVgo Holdings), which held approximately 55.2% of EVgo OpCo as of Q1 2026.

Average network utilization was approximately 24% in Q4 2025 — EVgo and Electrify America together significantly exceed the rest of the public DCFC industry (5% average per third-party data). The path to sustained positive Adjusted EBITDA depends on further throughput growth from an expanding EV fleet: FY2026 guidance (reaffirmed May 2026) is revenue of $410–$470 million and Adjusted EBITDA of $(20)M–$20M. Revenue composition is evolving toward higher-margin fleet, OEM, and eXtend (white-label operations) segments. Key commercial partnerships include GM (2,850 stalls under a build agreement), Uber (rideshare electrification), and Pilot Travel Centers. The company is targeting 12,500–13,900 year-end public stalls by 2029, with 1,400–1,650 new stalls planned in 2026 — the majority expected to operationalize in H2 2026.

NaaS Technology is the first US-listed EV charging service company operating in China and a subsidiary of Newlinks Technology Limited. It runs an asset-light charging services and software model, connecting EV drivers with charging stations primarily through the third-party Kuaidian platform, which as of September 30, 2024 linked approximately 1.15 million chargers across 360 cities (around 35% of China’s public charging infrastructure by connected-charger count at that date). In March 2026, the operator of Kuaidian agreed to transfer the platform to a wholly owned subsidiary of NaaS’s controlling shareholder, NewLink. NaaS earns revenue primarily through charging transaction fees, energy solutions, and software and services for station operators. Partnerships with BYD sub-brands (Dynasty, Ocean, Fang Cheng Bao), NETA, IM Motors, and Hongqi integrate NaaS’s platform into OEM in-car charging interfaces. It is incorporated as a Cayman Islands holding company with operations conducted through PRC subsidiaries.

Wallbox N.V. manufactures EV charging solutions spanning residential, commercial, and public applications, with manufacturing in Spain (Barcelona), Germany (ABL GmbH subsidiary, acquired October 2023), and the United States, and distribution across more than 100 countries. Its product portfolio includes the Pulsar Max/Plus AC home and commercial charger family; the Supernova DC fast charger (60–240 kW); the Supernova PowerRing modular DCFC system (up to 400 kW per outlet via proprietary DC Link technology); the Quasar 2 bidirectional V2G residential charger (12 kW, CCS); and the Hypernova 400 kW split-type DC charger (announced but still in development as of the most recent reporting date, April 2026). Wallbox is incorporated as a Dutch public limited company (naamloze vennootschap, Amsterdam) with headquarters in Barcelona, and is listed on the NYSE. FY2025 revenue was €145.1 million (down 11.5% year-on-year), with a gross margin of 38.3%.

⚠️ Distress flag: Wallbox reported negative total equity of €(31.5) million at year-end 2025 and entered a standstill agreement with its banking pool on October 9, 2025. After signing a commercial agreement on April 8, 2026 and securing €11 million in interim bridge financing, Wallbox completed a Spanish court-sanctioned financial restructuring: the Barcelona commercial court’s approval became final and non-appealable on June 25, 2026, and the associated financing closed in early July 2026. The restructuring converted term debt into a €57.6 million senior term loan and a €69.1 million PIK instrument (maturing December 2030), alongside a €42.8 million working-capital facility, and was accompanied by approximately €11.8 million of new equity (including a €10.65 million shareholder financing) plus a separate €4 million investment from new investor FOCUS ON NEXT FRONTIER. Cash and financial investments stood at €25.1 million at June 30, 2026, against total loans and borrowings of €191.3 million, of which €140.1 million was classified as non-current following the restructuring. The company also received an NYSE compliance deficiency notice in February 2026 for average global market capitalization below $50 million and stockholders’ equity below $50 million. In July 2026, the NYSE accepted Wallbox’s plan to regain compliance and granted an 18-month cure period running from the February 2026 notice, subject to semi-annual reviews.

Blink Charging is a US-based EV charging network operator — one of the largest EV charging networks in the United States, ranked third by the Department of Energy by networked port count as of its most recent reporting, with approximately 66,350 chargers connected to the Blink Network as of December 31, 2025 (~58,850 Level 2 and ~1,920 DCFC commercial chargers), of which ~8,250 are owned outright by Blink. Headquartered in Bowie, Maryland, the company operates across three deployment models: Blink-Owned Turnkey (Blink pays all costs, retains most revenue), Blink-Owned Hybrid (shared cost/revenue with property partner), and Host-Owned (host owns hardware, Blink provides network and fees). FY2025 revenue was $103.5 million (down 16.5% year-on-year), driven by a deliberate strategic shift away from hardware sales toward recurring service revenues: Charging Service Revenue grew 51% YoY to $32.3 million and Network Fees grew 53% to $12.2 million. Service Revenue reached 54% of Q4 2025 revenue — a record — against a 2028 target of 80%. The company has significant operations in the UK and Belgium, with a combined European and MENA footprint supplementing its US network.

The BlinkForward Initiative (announced May 2025) restructured the company materially: global workforce reduced from 513 to approximately 320 employees, in-house manufacturing exited (transitioned to contract manufacturing, completed January 2026), and run-rate OpEx reduced by approximately $39 million annually. Quarterly cash burn fell from $16.7 million in Q1 2025 to $2.0 million in Q4 2025 — the most significant operational achievement management cited. Cash at December 31, 2025 was $39.6 million; accumulated deficit stood at $822.4 million. On January 26, 2026, Blink received a Nasdaq deficiency notice for falling below the $1.00 minimum bid price requirement, with an initial compliance deadline of July 27, 2026. On July 28, 2026, Nasdaq granted a second 180-day compliance period running to January 25, 2027; Blink notified Nasdaq that it intends to cure the deficiency during that period by effecting a reverse stock split if necessary. In July 2025, Blink acquired Zemetric Inc., adding fleet and energy management software and the Shasta Level 2 charger with ISO 15118 Plug & Charge support. Blink sold its car-sharing subsidiary Envoy Technologies to Israeli-listed Blade Ranger on June 5, 2026, ending car-sharing revenue. The restructuring showed in the Q2 2026 margin line: GAAP gross margin was 38.9% against 16.8% in Q2 2025, operating expenses fell 57% to $14.7 million, and the adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to $2.2 million from $7.9 million, on revenue of $21.7 million (down 24.5% year-on-year as the company walked away from lower-margin contracts). Cash was $34.0 million at June 30, 2026, with no debt outstanding. In August 2026 Blink launched EnergyConnect, an energy management platform providing load monitoring, load balancing and demand-charge mitigation across its DC fast charging and Level 2 networks.

EV Industry Stocks — Investor FAQ

Electric vehicle stocks are publicly traded companies whose revenue depends on the shift from combustion engines to electric drive. This page groups them into three parts of the value chain. Automakers build the vehicles, and range from EV-focused manufacturers such as Tesla and BYD to diversified carmakers that sell electric and combustion vehicles. Battery companies supply the cells, and the cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator materials inside them. Charging companies build and run the hardware and networks drivers use to charge. The page is a union of the GSR EV Automakers, EV Battery and EV Charging lists, so every company here also appears on one of those three with fuller detail.
The case rests on electric vehicles taking a growing share of a very large, slow-turning market. The IEA put global electric car sales, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid, at 21 million units in 2025, around 25% of all new cars sold and up 20% on 2024. Electric cars make up a much smaller share of the cars on the road than of new sales. Sales share leads fleet share by years, because vehicle fleets turn over slowly. The three parts of the chain earn their money differently. Automakers convert volume growth into revenue directly, and compete on price to get it. Battery makers sell into multi-year supply agreements, which makes revenue more visible but ties returns to how full their factories run. Charging companies are building assets whose payback depends on how heavily each site is used. Growth is not evenly spread: China crossed 50% EV share in 2025 while US sales fell.
Risks differ across the EV value chain. Automakers compete on price and must fund vehicle development and production, while diversified carmakers also manage their combustion-vehicle businesses. Battery producers face changes in chemistry, raw-material costs and factory utilization. Charging businesses depend on their revenue model: equipment suppliers need customer orders, while network operators need enough use of their sites to support operating costs and investment. Smaller and development-stage companies can also depend on external funding. Policy, trade restrictions and manufacturing incentives can affect demand and costs across all three groups.
There are two routes: individual companies, or funds. Buying companies means choosing a position in the chain. Automaker shares track EV volumes most directly. Battery shares track cell and materials demand, which moves with EV production but also with grid storage. Charging shares are the smallest and youngest group, and several constituents are still loss-making. Funds hold a basket instead, though EV ETFs differ widely in what they count as an EV company: some are concentrated in Tesla and BYD, others spread across suppliers and materials, and a few include mining. The GSR EV ETFs list sets the funds out side by side. Either way, the three sub-lists behind this page carry the per-company detail that a composite table cannot.
China is the largest EV market, the largest producer of battery cells, and the source of most of the price pressure in the sector, so conditions there feed into prices and margins elsewhere. Chinese EV share of new car sales passed 50% in 2025, a level no other large market is close to. Vertical integration is the cost mechanism: BYD makes its own cells, and Chinese cell makers including CATL, Gotion and EVE supply much of the world’s LFP capacity. In the IEA’s 2025 global battery-pack price comparison, covering EVs and stationary storage, LFP averaged more than 40% less per kWh than NMC. For companies listed elsewhere this works in two directions. It compresses margins wherever Chinese vehicles compete, and it pushes Western governments and carmakers to fund domestic capacity. Tariffs on Chinese vehicles and batteries in the US and EU sit between the two and change the arithmetic case by case.
The US federal purchase credit for electric vehicles ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. US electric-car sales fell 2% in 2025, while global sales rose 20%. The US battery supply chain changed over the same period: Korean cell makers posted losses, some cathode producers trimmed planned capacity, and US battery joint ventures were restructured, including the dissolution of the SK On and Ford BlueOval SK venture, announced in December 2025 and completed in May 2026. Policy is one of the main inputs to the EV investment case. Emissions standards, tariffs and manufacturing credits also affect demand and costs across the markets these companies sell into.
An EV stock is one company, so the return depends on that company’s own products, costs and execution. An EV ETF holds a basket, which spreads company risk and dilutes it: a fund heavy in Tesla and BYD behaves very differently from one weighted toward battery materials or suppliers. The larger difference is definitional. There is no standard boundary for what counts as an EV company, so index providers draw it in different places, and two funds with similar names can hold quite different things. Some include lithium miners. Some include semiconductor suppliers. A few are close to a large-cap automaker fund with a thematic label. The holdings show which parts of the EV value chain a fund actually covers. The GSR EV ETFs list sets out the funds, their holdings and their costs; this page covers the individual companies.
This page combines GSR’s EV Automakers, EV Battery and EV Charging lists. A company is included when it appears on at least one of those three lists, and it is counted once here. Inclusion is decided on those lists, so a company leaves this page when it leaves all three. Its quick-view memberships show the parts of the EV value chain it covers; BYD appears under automakers and batteries, and Tesla under automakers and charging. Market caps are refreshed monthly, converted to US dollars at the rates shown above the table, and represent the entire listed company, including businesses outside EVs. Additions, removals and corrections are logged in List Updates below.

In plug-in vehicle reporting, an electric vehicle usually means a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV). A BEV uses a battery without an internal combustion engine, while a PHEV combines electric propulsion with an engine. Extended-range vehicles are a PHEV configuration in which the engine generates electricity for the battery and motors. Company categories such as ‘electrified’ or ‘new energy vehicle’ may cover different combinations, so sales totals require a stated definition.
In the car industry an OEM is a company that designs, builds and sells finished vehicles under its own brand, as distinct from the suppliers who make the parts inside them. The EV OEMs on this list fall into two groups. Pure-play manufacturers were built around electric platforms; they can sell BEVs, plug-in hybrids or both, and the Pure Play label does not establish 100% EV revenue. Legacy manufacturers are converting plants, supply contracts and dealer networks built for combustion engines, which spreads their EV costs across a much larger existing business.
The share of new vehicle sales in a stated market and period that meet a specified electric-vehicle definition. Comparisons must identify whether BEVs, PHEVs or other categories are included. Sales share differs from fleet share, which measures electric vehicles among all vehicles in use.
The materials used in a battery cell’s electrodes and electrolyte. Lithium-ion cathode families include nickel-based NMC and NCA, and iron-phosphate LFP. Chemistry affects energy density, cycle life, thermal behavior, cost and raw-material requirements, alongside cell and pack design. LFP contains no nickel or cobalt, although it still requires lithium.
A large battery-cell manufacturing complex, generally described in gigawatt-hours of annual production capacity. Nameplate capacity is the plant’s stated potential output rather than its actual production. Utilization, manufacturing yield, ramp-up and integration with upstream materials affect plant economics.
An all-solid-state battery uses a solid ion-conducting electrolyte in place of a liquid electrolyte. Products described as semi-solid or hybrid may retain liquid or gel. Potential benefits depend on the complete cell design, and removing flammable liquid does not eliminate every safety risk. Conductivity, interface stability, manufacturing yield and cost are central commercialization challenges.
Equipment and services used to recharge electric vehicles, from home AC charging to public DC fast charging. Businesses may sell hardware, operate charging sites, provide network software or combine these activities. Connection capacity, utilization, energy costs and service arrangements affect economics. Hardware shipments and an operating charging network are different measures of exposure.
EV charging connector developed by Tesla, opened to the industry in 2022, standardized by SAE as J3400 and since adopted by multiple automakers and charging networks in North America. CCS connectors remain in service across much of the installed base, so adapters and dual-cable chargers are common while the transition runs its course.
